This is our journal as we go through the 49 days (step-by-step) from decision to in-vitro fertilization. Scheduling, details, feelings, thoughts; all are recorded here. It is an amazing process, and we felt it vital to chronicle it.

"Creature Report"

Because of Disney Jr, we see a show called The Octonauts fairly frequently. They have a section where they sing a short ditty called "Creature Report," which always pops in my head whenever we discuss the embryo report. I may have explained this last time; I don't recall. Nonetheless, I keep waiting for a turnip and the dance break. Those who know the show will understand. Everyone else, don't worry about it.

Here is what we know 24 hours after the retrieval:

As I said yesterday, the procedure resulted in 19 eggs being taken from Kristina's ovaries. Of those 3 were immature, leaving us 16 which were capable of being fertilized. They attempted ICSI on all of those. The process is not perfect. One of the zygotes only has a single nucleus, instead of the expected two pronuclei. Also, there were five eggs that have not shown signs of successful fertilization. Those six will be watched for another 24 hours but are unlikely to become viable.

However, the good news is that leaves ten (10) healthy zygotes for our Day-1 report. Initially, this sounded a little disappointing to us as that is only a little over half of what was harvested. Also, it seemed like the same numbers we started with after our last cycle.

At the risk of being overly optimistic, after checking our log from last time, our numbers this time really are better. Only ten eggs were mature enough to fertilize last time and we lost two before the first 24 hours period. So, statistically, we are about the same success rate as last time but we have in total more successful zygotes than before. All of that translates to better odds for the end goal. However, much of this is "throwing dice" and there is a lot of time and growth still yet to occur.

Tomorrow will give us a little better picture, as we will get cell counts and symmetry ratings. We will give the information as it comes, but for us being reserved about interpreting what this means is the best we can do. So much is still up to God. Please pray on our behalf - for our future child and for our sanity as we wait through this eternal few weeks to know the results.
