This is our journal as we go through the 49 days (step-by-step) from decision to in-vitro fertilization. Scheduling, details, feelings, thoughts; all are recorded here. It is an amazing process, and we felt it vital to chronicle it.

Blinded With Science

Oh the interesting details one learns when going through in-vitro. Some I probably shouldn’t reveal here; however, one piece of information I will share is about the due date. We all know “9 months” or “40 weeks,” but the truth is neither is chronologically accurate.

What we have learned and verified from reliable sources, including old Biology books from college, is that pregnancy itself is closer to 38 weeks. However, the 40 weeks standard is used because the actual date of conception is often not known, at least in planned pregnancies. The 40-week schedule is a standard used, calculated from the first day of a woman’s last menstrual cycle.

So, what that means is the first two weeks of a pregnancy is counted even when no baby yet exists. Of course the exactness of ovulation varies from woman-to-woman, but the schedule assumes 14 days until conception as a mathematical average and sets the standard. By the time the HCG levels are detectable, usually 12 to 15 days after conception, a woman is calculated at 4 weeks pregnant – and every chart and “what the baby looks like” image is based from this 40-week standard.

However, we do know the exact moment of fertilization, since it happened in a petri dish. So, we can calculate the due date based on a 38-week calendar, even though we will use the 40-week reference when stating how far along Kristina is. From date of fertilization, 38 weeks puts the due date on November 21.

Just to show the variance in the schedule using the 40 week estimation, counting from her “first day” on the pregnancy calculator at WebMD.com, the due date would be November 9. So, it looks like our first thoughts of a Sagittarius baby have been rolled back to a Scorpio. A Halloween “boo” baby is unlikely and would be a bit early, but it I doubt Kristina gets accused of being a turkey-smuggler as she will probably deliver before Thanksgiving.
