This is our journal as we go through the 49 days (step-by-step) from decision to in-vitro fertilization. Scheduling, details, feelings, thoughts; all are recorded here. It is an amazing process, and we felt it vital to chronicle it.

Chemical Birthday

Not to reveal too many details in the explanation of our progress, but sometimes it feels like giving an update tells Kristina's “natural” timing. Then again perhaps we are the only ones familiar enough with the process to glean the calendar.

Anyway, today was Kristina's birthday and that last day of her the oral contraceptives, and the second of her Lupron shots. The shots are the lightest of the regimen, subcutaneous in the belly with very tiny gauge needles. It sounds worse than it is -- or so says the one who doesn't have to be stuck. She assures me that it's not too bad.

This means we are three weeks in, and have a skosh over three weeks until the retrieval procedure. After that it's a five-day wait to re-implant the top embryos. From that point, it's a good two weeks before we can know for certain whether the pregnancy has taken or not. Even then, the first trimester is relatively “iffy.”

Tonight, however, after only day two, my wife has small bruises and a crimson blotch on her abdomen. I suppose that replaces the birthday spanking she was due.

As she showed me these new blemishes, I kissed her belly and prayed a for blessing in her womb, asking God to prepare it perfectly to be the home for the future child we hope to have.
